Chamonix (and a slight bit of the Alps) is desperate for snow … the slopes aren’t even open yet. Disastrous for this time of year in regards to the tourism industry. I,being an enjoyer of non-ski activities, have not impacted by the lack of frozen particles of ice and took the cog railway up to the glacier.
The Mer de Glace, is one of the world’s most visited natural sites, and the largest glacier in France. The cog railway has been running since 1908. The train takes visitors up to the glacier where an ice grotto, hiking trails, hotel and restaurant, small crystal and glacier museum, and stunning views await. The grotto and gondola were closed so I walked the area and enjoyed a hot chocolate before descending off the mountain.
